Database driven sites

The cost of scripting a website to run off a back-end database is, of course, higher than a static site, but it can save you a lot of maintenance costs and many hours in updating your site

For a simple demonstration of how you could maintain your own content click here

You should run your site from a database if you have variable content (Product catalogue; news; diary dates etc.)
You should run your site from a database if you want a search facility on your site.
You should consider running your site from a database if you have a lot of data to display, even if it is static data.
You should consider running your site from a database if you have your data currently stored in this way.
There is no need to use a database for static content.

An example of a database driven site is this trade association site.

It uses the database that already existed as the basis of the “Directory Search” and a separate database (which we set up) for the news and news archive pages (also some pages in the restricted areas which you cannot view).

We would look silly if our site did not conform to web standards. This icon says that it does! Valid CSS

This site is optimised to browsers that support World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards, HTML4.01 and CSS1.
It is accessible to any browser or Internet device, but as you are not using a HTML4.01 or CSS1 compatible browser it will look, at best, flat and uninteresting. Formatting and positioning of the elements on the pages could be lost completely.
Why we now design to these standards is explained here
You can download free compatible browsers from a list provided here

Special note to users of Netscape 4:

Netscape 4 has very "buggy" support for CSS1 and amongst other things loses formatting when the screen is resized and has to be reloaded. We can script around these problems, but now do not ask our clients to pay for the extra hours of work entailed when only a small proportion of users (3% in June 2002 - and falling) still have level 4 Netscape, and in any case can upgrade for free.
Rather than present you with a confusing, partially formatted site we have removed all styling on this site for Netscape 4.
